Winter dryness. What to do?

We are moving slowly toward the end of winter and the beginning of spring. As you probably know, winter is the realm of Vata dosha and its cold, dry, rough, mobile qualities.

When it comes to imbalances, think about it this way. The dosha comes into the season slowly; it gets stronger to its peak and starts ebbing. The imbalance means the dosha accumulates in the body. The imbalance shows the doshas' own qualities, which are the above cold (cold hands and feet), dry (dryness in skin, hair, and guts leading to constipation), in joints (aching, creaking), rough (skin and hair due to dryness), mobile (busy mind, indecision, anxiety, insomnia).

I thought of sharing this again because a little red circle appeared on my arm last week. It looked like a burn, so definitely heat (excess Pitta) and the top skin dry (excess Vata). This is how you can see the qualities in action. In my case, my bane is excess heat. Not so much from the food, but because I go to bed too late. Over time, these little habits accumulate, and the body sends signals, communicating that it's unhappy with something. So, we should listen.

All of the above can be balanced by (always opposite qualities):

  • applying warm oil to your skin (warm cold pressed sesame oil is great for bones and joints. However, this really needs to be addressed from the inside out:
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp ghee first thing in the morning (olive oil is also ok).
  • 1 cup of hot milk with 1 tsp ghee, a pinch of cinnamon, and cardamom. You can also add a few fennel seeds or coriander seeds in case of excess heat (it is very tasty).
  • 1 tsp ghee in hot water before bed.
  • warm food and drinks only (this is important, as winter and spring share the cold quality).
  • practise alternate nostril breathing and remember the winter Yoga practice, which is still good to do now.

Hope you find these tips helpful.

Wishing you a lovely week.
